WHAT IS LCDS?
The Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science (LCDS) is a multi-departmental research centre located at the Department of Sociology at the University of Oxford, funded by the Leverhulme Trust and Nuffield College. Launched in October 2019 for an initial period of 10 years, the Centre is highly interdisciplinary, with the aim to disrupt and realign conventional thinking and infuse science into demography.
Your team: We currently have around 42 funded researchers, with 5 dedicated LCDS administrators where the Research Facilitator would be embedded. We have the first African Professor Francis Dodoo in our Department and our Centre is run by two female Full Professors Director Melinda Mills and Deputy Director Jennifer Beam Dowd with a diverse management team and researchers from the UK, Latin America, multiple European and African countries, United States, India, Canada, Russia and across Asia.
Your portfolio: You will start with a research portfolio of just over £20 Million. Our initial funding was around £13 Million and within the first 2 years our talented team of researchers has attracted an additional £8.84 Million in external research funds. This was from multiple funders, such as the European Research Council, British Academy, Economic and Social Research Council/UKRI, charity and commercial partners and beyond! Funding was awarded to senior but also early career emerging superstars (and we have many of those)!
Our research. We publish and produce research across a wide array of disciplines including demography, genetics, medical and health sciences, marketing, sociology, economics, biology, geography and more! We have also obtained funding to participate in three international PhD programmes, reflecting our commitment to train the next generation. Our research over the past years has covered many areas such as making genetic discoveries to estimating migration using the traces of digital migration to understanding the contagion of moods in social networks and understanding sexual identity through disclosure on social media. And that is just the tip of the iceberg!
Our impact. Our research has made real societal and policy impact. This year, the LCDS team received the O2RB Excellence in Impact Awards, for data driven policy interventions for our COVID work such as: our PNAS article led by Dowd, Block’s Nature Human Behaviour article on social network informed approaches to COVID, Engzell, Frey and Verhagen’s April 2021 PNAS article on learning loss in schools due to COVID closures, Aburto and Kashyap and team’s work on quantifying excess mortality and Mills and team’s work on face coverings, inequality to ability to follow covid measures and covid certification.
WHAT IS YOUR POSITION?
You will play a central role in coordinating and developing research activities in our thriving new interdisciplinary centre. The focus of the role is on helping to develop and sustain new research programmes, funding streams and endowments. You will be responsible for processing Centre grant applications and providing strategic feedback to our researchers as well as assisting with post-award management.
You must be educated to degree level or have equivalent experience (we are open!!), have worked in administration or research programme management and have knowledge of the research funding environment, as well as demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
You will also have strong financial management skills with experience of budget administration, have excellent organisational skills and be able to effectively juggle a mixed portfolio of activity whilst meeting deadlines, as well as maintain a proactive and adaptive attitude.
Relevant experience in a senior research role and knowledge of contracts is also welcome.
